Our Mission: North Star Child Advocacy Center serves the community by helping children achieve recovery and healing that will enable them to feel better about reaching personal goals and building strong, productive relationships. They do this by providing children with opportunities and the therapeutic environment to intuitively find a means for achieving their greatest potential in their appropriate stage of development and level of maturity.
What is North Star? Located in Clermont, North Star Child Advocacy Center is a child therapy center that specializes in non-directive play therapy for sexually abused children.
Currently there is no specialized play therapy center in South Lake County, no place for children to get the specialized therapy they need to recover from the trauma of sexual abuse. Although there are places children can get therapy, the founders of North Star understood the need for a specific environment that children who have suffered sexual trauma need and deserve. Rebecca Hanes and Sandra Cox, seeing the lack of this type of facility, decided to create one and the North Star Child Advocacy Center was born.
With the help of local merchants and volunteers, North Star and its board members have been preparing the center. With special thanks for a grant from The Community Foundation of South Lake County, North Star was able to furnish the play therapy room with play therapy tools and equipment, making this a state of the art facility.
In addition to creating a specialized play therapy center, Rebecca and Sandra have been funding the project by providing a service to other non-profit organizations by helping them navigate their way through federal and tax status requirements.
North Star Child Advocacy Center Board Members speak at local functions and with local groups about the problems associated with child sexual abuse and the therapy needed to recover.
